Grade R

In this introductory year of the Foundation Phase, it is appropriate to include learning through play strategy which promotes social, emotional, and physical development. Consequently, teachers are introduced to this strategy at workshops.

Mathematics

The hierarchical nature of Mathematics means that the first years of schooling are critically important for sound foundational knowledge. Providing primary school teachers with a wide repertoire of teaching strategies will assist in the selection of strategies best suited to improve learner performance in the school contexts. With a focus on computation, the teachers are introduced to alternative teaching methods (ATMs).

Languages

Reading and writing are the foundational skills that learners need to make progress in all subjects in the primary school and beyond. During workshops, the teachers are exposed to good teaching methods for reading and encouraged to fulfil all the reading curriculum components.

Natural Science and Technology

The integration of structured Practical work in Natural science and Technology is an important but neglected part of the curriculum. To mitigate this, teacher workshops are be held to familiarize teachers with suitable strategies to integrate practical work in their lesson.

School Management Team (SMT) / School leadership:

The roles, responsibilities, and accountability of members of the school leadership team are clearly articulated in DBE documents but if these are not fully understood and adopted the school is unlikely to function well and make the best use of the teaching and learning time available. Plenary workshops are held to capacitate the SMT on leadership and management strategies.

School Governing Body (SGB):

SGB members are seldom fully aware of their roles and responsibilities according SASA of 1996 as amended. Cluster workshops are held to raise awareness of these responsibilities and to encourage parental involvement in schools.
